History of Algae

If Algae is Such a Superstar, Why Don't I Know about It?
Algae was forgotten about until WW II, when the Hiroshima bomb left the Japanese without food. The USA Government was committed to helping Japan get back on their feet and remembered that years ealier, Germany had used algae to avoid mass starvation. So once again, algae came to the rescue as a much needed protein source to avert mass starvation. Interestingly, the algae given to the Japanese was chlorella aglae. And not only did it solve their protein needs, it also seemed to cure their radiation poisoning (from the nuclear bomb). This stunning discovery along with remarkable ability of algae to feed large numbers of people led the Americans (Carnegie Institute and Rockefeller Institute) to research chlorella algae extensively. At the time there was a growing nutrition crisis in America. Large numbers of military personnel were returning to America after the war to start families and there was an urgent need for fast production of healthy food to feed them. Algae looked like it could be the answer.
The Carnegie Institute conducted five years of research on algae and eventually concluded it held so much nutrition, it could be the solution to the food crisis. As a result, in 1951 they funded the world's first pilot plant to grow algae for wide scale, commercial use. The pilot plant was set up in Boston, MA at the Arthur D. Little facility. Expectations for a rapid deployment were high but when chlorella algae proved more complicated to grow and scale than expected, the pilot plant was shut down after just one year. Fortunately the algae story doesn't end here. The Japanese were also sure that algae held great potential and wanted to try their hand at cultivating it. So, all the research on algae was moved from the USA and Germany over to Japan where the next ten years were spent ten researching and refining chlorella harvesting methods. The good news is that not only were the Japanese successful in perfecting these techniques, since that time, they have grown chlorella algae into a billion dollar industry. Chlorella algae has been used worldwide for over 50 years. It is even used by Olympic athletes, NASA astronauts and tens of millions worldwide for energy, health and vitality. Now it's your turn.
